Gary, Sam and I made a quick trip to Utah for the wedding of my Brother, Dallin to his girlf of FOREVER, Shellee. This was the first time flying with Sam and I've heard horror stories and so I really wanted to try to be prepared. I called the airlines and thought I had got all the information I needed. NOPE!
Let's start with security...Gary dropped me off with Sam and the stroller, and the car seat, and the diaper bag, and my other carry on bag while he went to park the truck. I thought it was a smart idea to get a head start and try to make it through security. What was I thinking? EVERYTHING goes on the belt under the scanner, including any blankets the sleeping baby is wrapped in. I had to *WHILE HOLDING SAM* lift the heavy stroller onto the belt along with everything else with one hand and walk through security in socks. Yea, would have been nice to have Gary there. Next time I'll just wait for him. I'm pretty sure I looked like the biggest dork.
Then, I'm waiting at the gate and they announce that the entire plane is totally full. Awesome. I was hoping to get a row to ourselves so that I could feed Sam and not be squished and have to try extra extra hard to be very modest while doing it. Gary and I get up to the front of the line and hand her our tickets and she asks where the ticket is for Sam. I say "He's just going to be sitting on my lap" - Well, with all my Internet and calling research the few days before our flight NO ONE ever told me that I need to get a ticket for the infant who will be sitting on my lap. So, she let's Gary and Sam get on the plane and I have to go back to the counter to get a ticket for Sam. As I'm waiting in this eternally long line watching all the millions of people get on that plane, I send an ESP message to Gary telling him that I would be very appreciative if he could get us a far back row window and middle seat. Yeah, my message somewhere got lost because we ended up in the middle of the plane and I was in the middle seat! The poor lady sitting next to me. It all worked out fine in the end...but let's just say that Gary (and the lady sitting next to me) is now well aware WHY I want the back window seat on our next flight. :)Sam was the perfect baby. No screaming kid for me. I'm sure it will happen one of these days and I don't know what I'll do. I've always been one of those people who intentionally avoid sitting by anyone with small children on a plane for that VERY reason. Now I AM one of those people I always avoided. Yikes!
We rushed home, dropped Gary off and went to Brick Oven for a little last minute family shower for Shellee. It was fun to have everyone there. This is the first wedding where every single sibling and spouse was able to attend. We've always had at least one on a mission for every wedding.
Stay tuned for more of my trip to Utah...

FYI for next time, if you carry him in a mei tai or sling (without metal) you can just wear him through security. They won't make you unstrap and all that garbage. I learned the hard way. I took my mei tai off and the security guy (after I went through) told me that since it doesn't have metal, I could leave it on with the baby in it. Then the next time when they tried to get me to take it off, I just told them that I was told that I didn't have to and it wasn't a problem at all.
I'm so glad Sam was a little angel on the flight. That means you will not be able to travel up here again heheheh. Love you
WOW! That reminds me of flying to PA for Christmas last year. We had three kids 4 years old and younger and it was a total three ring circus! IT was the best when everyone would just stop and stare at us like we were out of our minds! As you can imagine, with three little kids getting through security was a sight to behold!
At least Sam was good on the plane! :)
Sorry about the e-mail, Tara. I got into grad school so that e-mail is now extinct. My new one is sarahdjackson@live.com. Please e-mail me because I seemed to have lost yours as well. Hope all is well!
